I don't know anything about Buy.com, if that's what you were talkiong about in your second post, but I have shopped from online places before. I don't do it often though. The places I have bought from are www.bestbuy.com, and www.braillebookstore.com. Well, actually, with the second one, I just filled out the form online, but then I printed it out to send by mail. Personally, I wouldn't pay for online orders with a credit card but that's just me. For the Best Buy order, I bought a gift card from a local Best Buy store and used that to pay for my order. I'd rather use a gift card for ordering, otherwise, I'd rather pay by check. I'm sure it has to be safe to pay online with a credit card since many people do it, but I myself would rather not.

Post 4 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 11-Dec-2006 3:23:01

By the way, both places turned out good. The one time I bought from bestbuy.com, it only took a few weeks for my CD to come in and it works just fine. Same thing with braillebookstore.com; all I ordered is working good plus customer service is friendly and helpful.

I shop on www.amazon.co.uk, and i also shop in the r n i b online shop over here and cobolt systems, i don't mind giving my credit card details as i know the sites i use are perfectly secure. i find it fairly easy to shop online.

Post 6 by frequency (the music man) on Monday, 11-Dec-2006 11:21:43

i shop online all the time. buy.com, amazon.com, newegg.com and various other places that have a good deal on things. If the place isn't too well known, it's a good idea to check out their store rating over at http://resellerratings.com.

Shopping is a bit tricky, always make in the FAQ section they say how it appears on your credit card, that way you know what it is when the statement is in. If ou want pm me I'll be glad to help you find trustworthy sites.

I only shop at amazon.co.uk, it's really quick and easy!

I have trouble navigating amazon.com. But I often shop on drugstore.com, qvc.com and many other sites. I've never had any problems resulting from using my credit card.

Post 10 by Jess227 on Monday, 08-Jan-2007 14:09:32

Amazon.com is great, but it's a lengthy process to get your items purchased. Not to mention at check out pop up ads flew up distracting me from what I needed to do.

Post 11 by bozmagic (The rottie's your best friend if you want him/her to be, lol.) on Saturday, 13-Jan-2007 14:44:48

To get out of those bloody annoying pop-ups, just press Alt F4 and go through the checkout again. I'm just about to order my first few items from Amazon.co.uk. I'm also going to try and turn on one-click ordering. I have been online shopping at RNIB and Cobalt Systems before, but it isn't something I do very often, mainly because my mother still likes to think she can control me, even though I'm 23 years old, and she'd go skitzo when she read my bank statements if I made a habbit of online shopping. Trouble is though, there's just so, so much stuff you have to get your hands on, so many must-haves out there.

Post 12 by cuddle_kitten84 (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2007 7:43:45

i agree jen, and i hate the way your mum controls you, sorry just feeling very honest today. i always read the credit card security thing and privacy policy before i shop on any site. How about grabbing the number of your bank and asking for statements in braille? that way, she can never control what you buy again.

Post 13 by bozmagic (The rottie's your best friend if you want him/her to be, lol.) on Wednesday, 31-Jan-2007 15:24:56

Hmmm! i could. I'll have to look it up in the yellow pages.

I'm not sure about amazon.co.uk. But on amazon.com, at the top of the screen, there is a link for a more simple version of the site for mobile phones and screen readers. Check it out.

I don't know if it works the same way in the UK, but if security of your info is a concern on a shopping site as it should be, If you look/listen to the address bar, you should hear something like http slash s at the beginning of the address. I was going to mention the accessible amazon site. I've never shopped on Amazon, but its way easier to navigate the accessible than the full-blown one.

I'm in the U.S., and have shopped at many sites online, and haven't had any trouble with security.

For drugstore, I prefer:
www.medichest.com

I haven't looked in some time, but think I found drugstore.com to be too cluttered and sluggish, and Medichest has a better selection.

Yeah, Amazon is ok, though takes some time to get used to, but I've used both the UK and US versions successfully. (I like to get books published in the UK before they come out here, because sometimes it's a long wait for the U.S. editions! The internet is a wonderful thing, sometimes. *smile*)

www.overstock.com is cool, too.

Post 20 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 21-Aug-2007 7:24:37

I don't really like shopping on the internet, because I like to be able to touch the things I'm buying if possible. That's why I don't like buying things from the Argos catalogue very much, because a description of a picture is no good to me. The only website that I do buy things from, because I have used most of them before and so know what they are like is: "onlineshop.rnib.org", which is the RNIB online shop website. But remember to type that address without the quote marks.

This is Karens * Karen s* I love shopping online andhave been since 2000. In fact, my husband and I do all or most of our holiday shopping online and every week or two I am ordering groceries from safeway.com. ;) at first, I struggled withit and my husband would say, just call and place the order. sometims I would, but most of the time not.. how can I learn if I take the easy way out and just call. I learned more from experimenting and through my frustrations then anything else.
But,now, I shop at amazon, findgifts.com, kb toys.com and others. :) its great! This way I have more independence and can " see " the items myself and do it all in the convenience of my home and in my pj's if I like. :) lol.. It can be kind of tricky filling out the forms and completing the orders. :) be patient and give yourself time though. It will get easier, with anything practice makes perfect ey? :)
Take care.:) editing

Post 22 by Miss Prism (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 22-Aug-2007 21:55:22

Right, I agree with what KarenS says. Once you get the hang of it, online shopping is great. You have as much time as you need to browse, you don't have to depend on someone else to describe items to you, and your choices are nearly limitless!

I like Ebay a lot, too, though the site has gotten steadily more cumbersome over the last couple of years. Once you are familiar with it, it's a good place to find bargains.

I like to get clothes from Ebay, particularly blue jeans, as I have such hell trying to find jeans that fit me in a store! Do they not make jeans for short women? *grumble* I've pinpointed the brand and size I need, and it's just much easier to get precisely what I want on Ebay. Other treasures I've found there are hard-to-find books and music, and the occasional piece of good jewelry.

Post 23 by chocolab (move over school!) on Monday, 27-Aug-2007 0:58:36

I don't know why everyone says amazon is difficult tonavigate. The access site isn't great because they totally scaled down the features, which is fine if you're browsing via blackberry. But I just love amazon drugstore though I'l need to take a look at that new site I just saw, good luck ron girl.

I like actually going to the store and do my shopping. That way I can see what things look like. Things like electronics i can shop online for.

Post 26 by motifated (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 07-Mar-2008 9:18:57

Actually, electronics are kinda scary to me on line. They might not tell us in the description about a touch pannel, or if someone has partial vision, they might not be able to tell from the photo of the displays are readable. Although it is a bit pricy, I like the way that landsend.com describes their clothes.

I think it's great when I can get a picture of what I'm buying but if we're talking electronics; radios, phones, ETc I might not always buy them if I'm unfamiliar with the models. I'll mostly take a chance if I already know what they are. I say take a chance because although it hasn't happened yet to me, I've heard of people being burnt buying something on eBay. If anything though lots of people I know won't purchase things on the internet if it requires them to put in a credit card. They are so scared that something bad will happen. I have no way to assure them because as it is nothing bad has happened to me thus far. Most of it is just using your head. One thing that I get a lot is emails from pay pal telling me to re-enter my info, or telling me there's a problem with my account and click on this link. Well that ass bull shit because I don't have pay pal. In fact I have no credit in my name at all. When I do any kind of shopping or anything that requires that kind of info I have a close friend help me and I pay her in cash after she fills in the boxes for me. She's never been burnt and ironically she doesn't get those fake emails. However I've been told that those people will not email you that way if there's a problem. Chances are you'll be the one contacting them because if your account is not good, you won't have access to it. There's lots of fishing schemes out there where your personal info would be at someone else's gain at your expense. As long as you mostly avoid those you're good. I think some of these on line things should have cash on delivery. Now of course you can certainly screw them up but mostly people won't. I'm not sure what you'd do if you're buying a subscription for something. For instants I have a subscription for on line XM and serious and at some point, I might get one for the zone. I can't see how any of those would be cash on delivery but I guess for tangible things, perhaps!

Post 28 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 07-Mar-2008 17:07:00

C.O.D. would be nice for tangible items, but I don't see it happening. LOL, as far as electronics, I find what I like online, and then go into the store and look at it to see how usable it is. I don't use Ebay either. Not because I'm afraid of getting screwed; (or at least it's not a major concern), but instead it comes down to wanting to see; (feel) what I'm buying before it's bought, and this goes for almost anything I'm buying...Unless I'm buying for someone else who's completely sighted, and then I make no probs if they have to return the item for some reason.

Post 29 by motifated (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 07-Mar-2008 23:48:05

I agree with the last poster's strategy completely. I enjoy doing my homework in the privacy of my own home with no sales people acting like vultures.

Okay I love shopping online for anything, except clothes, unless I've touched it before. Navigating amazon, and any other site I've not had any trouble with. I find I can get better prices, learn more about the item I'm searching for, compare it it other items, were in some stores they only carry the brands they are pushing, and so you can't compare. In electronics brand names are best purcheased. They have return policies, and other protection methods in place, plus you can usually call customer service while your looking at something. As far as credit cards almost all have protection in place and your only responsible for the first $50 in the U.S, so use them and don't worry. Most will cover you period. Now on E-Bay you can read the sellers ratings, and also if the product you ordered is not as it should be return it. Using PayPal is also a great thing if the sites your shopping on have it. It protects you from many things. I love it. For the blind person I just think it's the best thing to happen. I purchased my Dell computer like that, and I receive great services, so.

I like old fassion electronics and old technology so I always find stuff on e-bay. Of course you take your chances buying things there but since a lot of crap I buy nowadays is being fazed out, e-bay still carries it fortuneately.

Post 34 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Thursday, 13-Mar-2008 14:39:31

Most electronics and stuff come in a box so I really don't see what the difference is buying it at the store or online. Clothes I rather get at the store and they don't come in boxes.

Post 35 by blw1978 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 13-Mar-2008 22:23:46

For those of you with security concerns, use PayPal. I too like to shop on EBay. I just recently bought two mp3 players. One for myself and another one for my nice. The only clothes I'd buy from EBay are maybe a pair of jeans, or something basic like a white t-shirt. Ladies, if you want a good site to buy name-brand shampoos, www.sleeklook.net is a good one. Shipping and handling isn't that much, and if you're sick of having to go to the salon just for hair products, give it a try. The site is quite descriptive as well. I do like to shop online. Especially for Christmas and Easter gifts.

Post 36 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Friday, 14-Mar-2008 1:02:48

Most stores will allow you to remove the item from the box to "See" it with your hands. I've had no stores give me hassel about looking, and a lot of the time there is a "display model" already out of the box, so, you don't even have to hassel with opening a box. I don't take computer games, cd's, etc out of the box, but I'm referring to phones, answering machines, mp3 players, etc. Cingular for example will actually remove their phones from their glass case and let me look at it: They'll even let me turn it on and off to check out sounds...This has been the case both in the Cingular store and Radio Shack; I haven't tried it at Wal-Mart or any other store who carries Cingular items, but I wouldn't think it would be an issue.

Sorry Ladies, the shampoo website is www.sleekhair.net. Sorry for the confusion. I was just looking through this post when I noticed the mistake. also, does anyone know of a good website to buy stylish clothes? I'm quite uh, well endowed, and buying tops is really frustrating. Lots of sights now offer size charts which is nice. Any suggestions?

Post 38 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 03-Apr-2008 7:49:52

I won't buy clothes online, I simply can't try it on ... cyberly? to see if it fits...
Groceries www.safeway.com
Computer/electronics stuff
www.tigerdirect.com
newegg.com
outpost.com
check bbb.org for reputable sites.
Here are some questions you should ask yourself and find answer to from the site before you shop.
1. Does that site have a physical address?
2. Does that site have a working phone number with a human on the other end?
3. Is that site listed on the bbb.org?
4. How does that site handle returns?
5. Does that site charge tax, if so, which states?
6. What will the site charge for shipping costs?
7. What are people saying about that site on other webpages/blogs?

Answers to those questions will save you a lot of grief in the future.

OMG, I love shopping online. It sometimes is stressful to shop for gifts, but I'll read the descriptions then call customer service and have them look at the item and describe further if needed.

A small sampling of where I like to shop...
amazon, of course
petco.com and various dog websites
qvc.com, of course, love that site!
newegg, once or twice, user friendly and quick shipping.
ebay and half.com, though not for a while
bn.com, belonged to their member club for a year, great savings!
cduniverse, it's been a while, but think it was easy to use.
landsend, great site and wonderful exchange or return policy.

Lol, I know once I hit post, a gob more site will comes to mind.

Post 43 by Miss Prism (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Thursday, 04-Sep-2008 18:58:46

It's hard to shop for clothes online, because the sizing charts are usually impossible to figure out using a screenreader. If possible though, find a site which gives actual measurements, for instance waist30, bust36, skirt length 25, etc. instead of merely one which tells you, size 6. A size 6 (or whatever) could be anything!

I like Ebay, too, but I think I said that before. But speaking of, it's changed recently. I seem to get booted out of forms mode every time I try to type something into the search field. This has been going on for a month, now. I've gotten around it by pasting my search terms in, but I'm still very irritated by this. Also, you can't click on the "pay now" button, which takes you directly to the Paypal login screen. It simply doesn't register. I have no idea if a newer version of Jaws would help...I have v7.

The folks that have shopped with safeway.com, could you tell us more? Do you have your groceries delivered? How much is shipping? Do you get the same sort of sale prices online?

Thanks, this may be really useful. I haven't found an online grocer yet.

Post 45 by SunshineAndRain (I'm happily married, a mom of two and a fulltime college student.) on Friday, 05-Sep-2008 14:31:11

I shop a lot online. The majority of my shopping is done on Ebay, Amazon, Independent Living Aids, and Speak To Me. Speak To Me allows you to listen to the different products. It doesn't work with PDA'S, so I recommend you use your PC for this site. It's speaktomecatalog.com. Also, when I live in Northern California, I used to use Safeway's online shopping service a lot. I got my groceries the next day, and it was very simple for me to utilize. I must also tell you, that if you don't live near a Safeway or Albertson's (The stores I know work with online shopping), you cannot utilize their services. For this situation, I recomend you use Amazon's grocery store, (It only has dried goods), but for everything else, you'd have to use whatever store is near you.

Post 46 by choco ice cream (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 23-Sep-2008 14:07:57

I think shopping online is really a great advantage.

Through this, you can be independent. Although not all items can be buy through online shopping, however, you can buy whatever you want. Sad to say, but that service is not available in the Philippines yet. I don't know. But I hope.

Post 47 by Lithium (Generic Zoner) on Wednesday, 24-Sep-2008 22:19:53

Online shopping is own. belk.com, the perfume spot.com, tower records.com, amazon.com, walmart.com, kmart.com, newegg.com, wetseal.com, forever21.com, 15dollarstore.com, get heavenly.com and those are a few I shop at. Some times getting to stores are not possible at the moment. I've learned that as long as you know what you want, then your online shopping experience shouldn't be to bad. I agree some sites just don't give enough description. I don't usually mess with those. Shopping for clothes are not really all that bad. I know what size I wear like in jeans I am a size 7 in juniors. That's the main key. You have to know if you are junior, miss, plus, short, tall, whatever. I also know what colors complement my skin and hair. I guess it helps I've had better vision before, but yeah, I love shopping for clothes online. Besides, you can find some real awesome deals online. Even better than what you can get in the stores. Although, I admit a girls day out for shopping is lots more fun.

Post 48 by cumbiambera2005 (i just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 25-Sep-2008 10:30:35

I have bought a few things online, but I dont really like it much anymore. i recently had someone get a hold of my credit card info and make an unauthorized purchase, so I'm not really happy with continuing to shop online, but I do it, I guess. It's about the convenience. However, i might suggest, and this is something I do, or try to do, after I make any sort of online purchase, I restart my computer automatically, in case there is someone who might track my info, which apparently they have before! Especially for me who is using an unsecured wireless network, I think it is better to do that so I dont have to worry too much! That way, it doesn't give people time to track it. I still worry, but as it seems most things are being sold online nowadays, i think that's the best thing i can do for security purposes.

Hi, I like oldnavy.com. I also like wlamart.com and ebay.com Oldnavy has hase online size charts. You open a combo box then click which one you'd like. The site is also very descriptive as well.
